Position Overview
Under the supervision of full-time network engineers, the Network Engineering Assistant works on installing and replacing edge switches in the UC Berkeley data network. This includes surveying existing communications rooms and Ethernet switch configurations; configuring new network switches to prepare them for use on the campus network; documenting and labeling cables and ports on existing switches; replacing switches during scheduled maintenance windows; troubleshooting and repair of damaged cable and connections; tier 1 and 2 problem resolution [complex tier 2 and tier 3 are referred to full-time network engineers]; and troubleshooting and replacement of dysfunctional network equipment and other related devices.
Qualifications
Required: Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills; effective communication skills; working knowledge of computer operations [hands-on installation or building computer hardware, electronic or mechanical devices]; comfortable using command line computer interfaces; good at troubleshooting; self-motivated, strong work ethic, good time management; must be able to quickly learn and apply information on technologies; ability to work productively in a team or independently and exercise judgment and initiative; ability to lift computer equipment (50-100 lbs); minimum GPA of 2.0.
Preferred: Strong organizational and administrative skills; experience writing technical documentation; basic knowledge of computer desktop hardware/applications (Microsoft Office, Unix, etc.), ability to apply the OSI layers model (especially layer 1 to 3), knowledge/experience of different types of Ethernet switches, experience troubleshooting network problems according to Cat 5e standard; some knowledge of TCP/IP; minimum GPA of 2.3
Terms of Employment
The period of employment for this position commences upon hiring and continues through end of the 2011-2012 academic year. (There is a possibility of employment for Summer, 2012.)
The Network Engineering Assistant is paid a wage based on experience and qualifications between $16.00 and $22.00 per hour. The position’s classification title is Student Assistant IV. The Network Engineering Assistant must be a currently enrolled UC Berkeley student with a minimum GPA of 2.0. (2.3 or higher preferred). Students with less than a 2.3 GPA may be asked to limit their work hours.
The position is required to work at least 10 hours per week during the academic year, including a minimum of 3 consecutive hours between 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday and scheduled maintenance windows in the late evening (11 pm through 2 am) and/or early morning (5 am through 7 am) and occasionally on weekends. A work schedule will be determined in consultation with the supervisor, and every effort will be made to be as flexible as possible in scheduling meetings and maintenance windows.

Duties
Under the direction of senior network engineers and administrators, the Network Engineer Assistant will perform the following:
(90%) Network Equipment Configuration, Installation, and Replacement
* Responsible for assisting in installation, setup, and support of network infrastructure for the UC Berkeley campus.
Survey existing communications rooms and Ethernet switch configurations
Configure new network switches to prepare them for use on the campus network
Document and label cables and ports on existing switches
Replace switches during scheduled maintenance windows
Troubleshoot and repair damaged cable and connections
Resolve tier 1 and 2 trouble reports associated with new or replaced switches [complex tier 2 and tier 3 are referred to full-time network engineers]
Troubleshoot and replace dysfunctional network equipment and other related devices
Perform network equipment upgrades
Responsible for prompt action on projects and trouble reports; prompt update and follow-through with team members/Leads in completing specific tasks
Provide courteous and prompt customer service in response to requests
Collaborate with the team and other IT staff in providing and improving network services.
(10%) Documentation and Training
Check systems and emails regularly
Participate in on-going training
Attend required team meetings
Actively participate in annual self-evaluation and team collaboration
Maintain, document, and label network devices/equipment/closet/database and all the network drops (end user connections)
Update equipment inventory for tracking purposes
Document problems, solutions, and inventory updates
Assist in developing educational resources, such as information sheets and network troubleshooting resources, procedures.
